JOB TITLE: Northwest Coast Field Director

THE POSITION: We are presently looking for a Northwest Coast (NWC) Field Director to undertake our projects with us for the 2024/2025 field season. Most work will take place along the east coast of Vancouver Island. The position will initially be as-and-when and on a project-by-project basis, with an option to take on more projects as mutually agreed upon. The ideal candidate would be able to subcontract their services to Sea-Beneath, though an employment situation may also be possible.

JOB ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Working with Sea-Beneath senior archaeologists and principals on project research design, client and First Nations collaboration and consultation, and project planning and logistics.
  • Conducting archaeological impact assessments (AIA) for municipal infrastructure projects including domestic utilities, along with parks and recreational developments, and smaller scale, residential services and builds. Several of these projects may include a marine component which would be supported by Sea-Beneath’s marine archaeologist.

  • Assisting with Archaeological Overview Assessments (AOA) and Preliminary Field Reconnaissance (PFR) activities.

  • Working with Sea-Beneath senior archaeologists and principals on project research design, client and First Nations collaboration and consultation, and project planning and logistics.

  • Conducting archaeological impact assessments (AIA) for municipal infrastructure projects including domestic utilities, along with parks and recreational developments, and smaller scale, residential services and builds. Several of these projects may include a marine component which would be supported by Sea-Beneath’s marine archaeologist.

This position may be right for you if you:

  • Are Indigenous or an ally who is committed to conducting archaeological work with an appreciation and respect for First Nations cultural values, sense of place, and Nation cultural heritage permitting policies and protocols.
  • Are familiar with Article 11 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) and strive to incorporate its values into all aspects of your archaeological work.
  • Have a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the current BC Heritage Conservation Act (HCA).
  • Are compliant in following current Archaeology Branch policies and protocols regarding permitting and assessment activities in BC, in the execution of your duties.
  • Can demonstrate an understanding of the HCA Transformation Project and are willing to pivot and adapt to the ongoing development of archaeological policy and procedure.
  • Have a minimum bachelor’s or graduate degree in archaeology or anthropology and can demonstrate that you are a qualified NWC Field Director in accordance with Archaeology Branch Bulletin 17. You must be able to provide your experience table for review, (unless grand-fathered).
  • Have a minimum of (3) three years of NWC field experience directing impact assessment and site alterations. Experience working in urban environments is a definite asset.
  • Have demonstrated experience in the respectful handling of ancestral remains and belongings, and a willingness to follow all First Nations protocols and procedures related to burial sites through the course of your work.
  • Have project management experience with strong client and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills and can provide samples of permitted reports that you are the senior author of.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Have a valid BC driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Possess a minimum Level 1 WorkSafe BC recognised first aid certificate.
  • Have additional valid industry certifications like ATV, Bear Aware, WHMIS, Advanced or Wilderness First Aid, TDG, Ground Disturbance, etc. are also beneficial.
  • Scuba diving experience and advanced certifications would also be an asset.
